Fate is something we cannot control. Freewill is something we have control over. These two are basically the exact opposite. You don't know where your going to end up in the future but what you have control over now is how you live your life. In the play Romeo and Juliet Fate and freewill both play a part because its fate that they meet at a party and are star crossed lovers, but then again its freewill by them not wanting to not live without each other and killing themselves.
In the play Romeo and Juliet fate became how everything happened. Romeo went to the Capulet's Party which Juliet appeared to be there because she is a part of the family. When Romeo and Juliet both saw each other it was as if it were love at first sight. After that, these two star crossed lovers saw each other and wanted to be with one another but that was a problem. Since their families did not like each other they wouldn't allow it. “O I am a fortune's fool!”(3.1.11)
What Romeo says in this quote is fate or fortune is the answer of Tybalts death. If Romeo believes that it is fate then there are many other things he believes are also based on fate.
If it weren't for Juliet listening to Friar Laurence about taking the fake poison, that which happened would have never been right?
Freewill is your own choice you have control over what ever you do and if that was your choice you are only to blame for it. These two star crossed lovers wanted to be with each other forever. When Juliet swallowed the fake poison that made her appear dead for a certain amount of time it was her own choice. It appeared that Romeo showed up and saw her pretending her death so Romeo assumed he had nothing else to live for because the love of his life was dead for this reason he chose to take the poison which was the real thing. In short time Juliet woke up and saw he was no longer alive so she killed herself with a dagger. They didn't want to live without each other so they killed themselves which is freewill because that was their own choice.
It can be argued by some people that the story of Romeo and Juliet was purely based on fate. Meeting by chance at a party and falling in love even though your family's are rivals is truly fate. Never being allowed to live your lives happily together can also be blamed on fate. Other people can argue that both lovers chose to go to the party where they met. Also the lovers chose not to live without each other leaving freewill to blame for their outcome instead of fate.
Fate and freewill play a part in our lives on a daily basis.
As you can see both fate and freewill played a part in the play of Romeo and Juliet. There are things that we have no control over in our lives. For example who's going to be at the same party that you attend or how you have control over how your family's act with or without you. Having freewill is one of the strongest powers that we have as human beings. Being able to decide whether to live or die and for what reason is definitely the best example of freewill. Now people can see it as their isn't any fate but in the play of Romeo and Juliet fate has a face.
